Contractor Job Descriptions: What To Look For

Contractor Job Descriptions: What To Look For

Cloud & IT Infrastructure contractors will see plenty of job adverts and job descriptions over their careers.

These allow you to peek inside the business and learn about the role.

But what should contractors be looking for in job descriptions? What should they be asking themselves?

Our Contract Team Lead Lee Barham lets you in on the tips you need:

“Job descriptions and job adverts are two very different things.

Job adverts are essentially selling the opportunity to the contractor, providing them with bullet point information on the actual role but focussing more on the company sector, commercials, and a brief outline of the skills for the assignment and whether it falls inside or outside the scope of IR35.

Contractors should be looking through the job advert and asking themselves if this role is actually of interest to them.

Are they fully invested in the role?

Does it fit their skills set?

Are they happy to travel?

Are the commercials where they need to be?

Are they happy working inside or outside the scope of IR35?

The job description will go into much more detail than the job advert.

It will go through the nuts and bolts of the role and what is required day-to-day, key responsibilities, lines of reporting and define how the role is to be measured and ultimately setting expectation levels.”
