What Recruiters Look For When Screening Candidates

How do you know who you should trust? Who is worth your time?

Our Head of Delivery Jimmy Hearne believes you should be able to know a good recruiter from a bad one in the first couple of calls:

“For me, the initial screening call between a specialist Cloud & IT infrastructure recruiter and the candidate is the most important part of the process.

It works both ways. It’s a chance for the cloud recruitment consultant to get to know:

  • your technical experience
  • what you’re looking to do moving forwards
  • your personality and character
  • your potential fit with the culture and values of the client

It’s also really important you get an idea of, and have full faith in, the person and business on which you’re spending your time and energy.

As a candidate, there are lots of different recruiters out there who are different in many ways. 

It’s crucial you invest your time in the right recruiter.

Not only does it have to be right for the recruitment consultant to represent you, but it also has to feel comfortable for you as the candidate. 

You should ask yourself these questions:

  • Are they asking you the right questions?      
  • Are they putting you in front of the right clients?
  • Are they fully aware of your skill sets?
  • Are they sending you the right job specifications?
  • Are they sending you to the right jobs?
  • Do they understand your passion for technology?
  • Do they understand your desire and where you want to go in your cloud & IT infrastructure career?

So for me, the pre-screen is the most important part of the process.

Are the questions above being answered in the first couple of calls with your recruitment consultant?

The agent should be making sure they’re happening. To represent you as a candidate effectively, they need to understand you and know you are who you say you are. 

We need to trust you, but most importantly we want you to trust us.

A proper pre-screen process should give you that trust.”
