Avoid distractions in your Cloud & IT Infrastructure job video interviews

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for a year and a half, you will have firmly noticed the sharp rise in video technologies playing a part in all aspects of our day-to-day lives.

Recruitment has been much the same. More and more candidates are facing video interviews, meaning it’s more important than ever to understand how to show off the best version of you on camera to prospective employers.

One of the best ways you can do this is to avoid distractions in your Cloud & IT Infrastructure job video interviews.

Our Head of Delivery Jimmy Hearne tells us why:

“There are a few key areas that I would address when facing a video interview.

The first of these is to prepare sufficiently.

This means not only readying yourself but also the people and environment around you.

Partners, parents, children, pets; try to keep any possible external influences away from wherever you are taking the video interview. This will help not only to minimise noise distractions and possible distortion over your microphone, but it will also keep you focussed on the interview itself.

The location of where you take the interview is also important.

In terms of noise, candidates should endeavour to take the video interview in a location which is free from background noise including music, construction etc. Again, this will help to minimise distractions for both you and the hiring managers on the call.

Alongside this is the visual aspect. Keeping our work areas tidy is something we should all aim to do but inevitably fall behind on. Either way, you should tidy up the area behind you to keep the focus on you and away from the pile of laundry you haven’t gotten around to tidying up yet!

If you do get a distraction, it’s not the end of the world!

Simply be human.

If your child runs into your office to tell you all about dinosaurs and sharks then it’s okay! At the end of the day we’re all human, and will also show a mature side to you if you are able to brush off the distraction in a considerate way and move on professionally.

So if you have a video job interview coming up soon, the three things I would do is:

1. Prepare

2. Avoid distractions

3. If you are distracted, be human with it

By doing those things you will take away a huge amount of stress on yourself and allow you to focus on showing the hiring managers your passion for Cloud & IT Infrastructure technologies.”
